The Ship of Fools, the most ambitious of Solmi's recent works in terms of dimensions, contains the stylistic studies carried out by the artist in recent years. The artist recalls Gericault's masterful work, The Raft of the Medusa, challenging the now unusual style of the historical painting. Contemporary and historical leaders, from Garibaldi to Elon Musk, compose a grotesque theatrical show, staged on a raft lost at sea. The drama of the shipwreck is replaced by a bacchanalian atmosphere of celebration and perdition. Only three characters contrast with the pleasure-loving air, the three 'thinkers': the critic Lawrence Wechsler, the curator Larry Ossei-Mensah and the philosopher Socrates, appear focused on trying to find a way of salvation for a world in the hands of out-of-control leaders. The artist seems to suggest that art and thought are the only ways of salvation from the foolishness of present time and  history. All the characters in the work are victims of a historical failure, protagonists of Western propaganda which for centuries has falsified real accounts through an ethnocentric point of view.

The Ship of Fools, per dimensioni la più ambiziosa delle recenti opere di Solmi, racchiude gli studi stilistici portati avanti dall’artista negli ultimi anni. L'artista rievoca l'opera magistrale di Gericault, La Zattera della Medusa, sfidando l’ormai inusuale stile del dipinto storico. Leader contemporanei e storici, da Garibaldi a Elon Musk, compongono uno spettacolo teatrale grottesco, messo in scena su una zattera persa in mare. La drammaticità del naufragio è sostituita da un’atmosfera baccanale di festa e perdizione. Solo tre personaggi sono in contrasto con l’aria gaudente, i tre ‘pensatori’ appartati nel retro della zattera, il critico Lawrence Wechsler e curatore Larry Ossei- Mensah e il filosofo Socrate, appaiono concentrati nel tentativo di trovare una via di salvezza per un mondo in mano a leader fuori controllo. L’artista sembra suggerire che l'arte e il pensiero siano le uniche vie di salvezza dalle stoltezza della storia. Tutti i personaggi dell’opera sono vittime di un fallimento storico, protagonisti della propaganda occidentale che per secoli ha falsificato resoconti reali attraverso un punto di vista etnocentrico.
